Mature wines: the embodiment of magic and joie de vivre

For many people, drinking wine is closely associated with special occasions – a symbol of celebration that accompanies a festive evening. Some associate a glass of wine with moments from their childhood, shaped by their parents’ habits. Others appreciate a glass of wine to help them unwind after a long day at work or to relax in good company.

For some of us, wine has a much deeper meaning.

In search of lost flavor

It is a quest for lost flavor. This quest, one might say, is a kind of personal Madeleine moment, a tribute to Marcel Proust’s masterpiece In Search of Lost Time. Proust’s story begins with the delicate flavor of a madeleine that his mother gives him as a child. This seemingly insignificant pastry, dipped in lime blossom tea, has the power to evoke an entire world of lost memories and sensations.

Wine lovers also aspire to such a moment. They seek the flavor and the experience that was once captured in the perfection of a wine – those unforgettable drops that tell of a special time, a unique place or an almost mystical moment. A sip can be like a journey through time, an attempt to preserve and relive past moments of happiness. It is a pursuit of sensuality, of joie de vivre and of the magic of the moment.

The magic of the moment

For some, this pursuit is like the first time you dive into fresh powder after a long summer season. Others compare it to returning to the place where they first met their great love. These moments are more than just memories; they are deeply rooted sensations of freedom, joy and connection.

Wine is not just a drink. It opens a door – to memories, to stories, to encounters. It has the magic to bring people together and to turn a fleeting moment into a lasting memory. But what happens when a wine doesn’t deliver what you expected of it?

“There is no such thing as a good wine, only good bottles”

A wise friend of ours used to say, “There is no good wine, only good bottles.” These words were once spoken over a bottle of Leroy that had a slight cork taint. Despite the initial disappointment, this moment remained unforgettable – not because of the perfection of the wine, but because of the people with whom it was shared.

What does this statement mean? It is a reminder that it is not only the wine itself that counts. It is about the company, about sharing, about the willingness to open a special bottle and enjoy it with others. The true magic of wine lies not only in its taste, but in the stories and moments we create with it.

The value of the moment

Wine is not a static experience, but a living expression of time and place. A bottle may shine in its youth when tasted, reach sublime depths in maturity – and sometimes, yes sometimes, it is simply past its peak. But that shouldn’t bother us. Because ultimately, it’s the moment that counts.

Even if a wine is not perfect, that shouldn’t stop us from appreciating the moment we share with others. It’s about being willing to open special bottles and enjoy them without being distracted by the search for perfection.

Wine as an expression of joie de vivre

The search for the lost flavor is not a search for an ideal, but for a defining feeling. It is the attempt to capture fleeting moments of joie de vivre and freedom and hold on to them for a moment. This is precisely where the true power of wine lies. It is more than just a drink. It is an invitation to celebrate the moment, to connect with others and share stories that resonate long after.

Some collectors compare it to foraging for mushrooms in the forest – that mixture of anticipation and excitement about whether the find will live up to expectations. Likewise, many wine lovers feverishly await the question of whether the opened bottle still retains the magic it once promised. Some associate certain vintages and special bottles with milestones in their lives: birthdays, anniversaries, company launches or other significant events. Each of these bottles has the potential to evoke memories when opened and to bring the beauty of past moments to life – a perfect Madeleine moment that shows us how precious these moments were.

And who knows? Perhaps the next bottle we open will hold another Madeleine moment, a flavor that reminds us of something we thought was lost, showing us that beauty still lies ahead.

Our philosophy

Our auction house was born out of this passion and conviction. At Creneaux Weinauktionen, we have made it our mission to track down extraordinary and promising bottles from the best cellars and bring them to collectors and wine lovers.
